In the style of France and the UK, the FBI has released its UFO archives on the internet for the years 1947-1954. The files reveal Police-UFO encounters, whitehouse panic over animal mutilations, details of the Roswell incident and the destruction of 1000s of UFO reports. In one example case, on April 4 1949 special agents sent a cable marked ‘urgent’ to the bureau director, Edgar Hoover. A policeman, a highway patrol and an army guard, who were all miles apart, each saw a UFO which they said exploded over mountains near Logan, north of Salt Lake City, Utah. Under the title ‘Flying Discs’, the document said they each "saw a silver coloured object high up approaching the mountains at Sardine Canyon" that "appeared to explode in a rash of fire." It added, "Several residents [reported] seeing what appeared to be two aerial explosions, followed by falling object." Documents also show that an earlier UFO sighting had been investigated in Logan in September 1947.
The FBI destroyed thousands of UFO reports, one 1949 memo reveals. The FBI was so overwhelmed with sightings of flying saucers in the 1940s that agents routinely destroyed reports because of lack of filing space. The policy is outlined in a memo sent on 16 August 1949 to J Edgar Hoover, the director of the bureau, along with documents on UFOs compiled by agents with statements from witnesses. The note, sent by an unnamed FBI agent in San Antonio, Texas, states that the office destroyed UFO reports on the grounds that they arrived "in great numbers" and contained "nothing of FBI interest." It continues, "It is pointed out that the filing of these would result in the rapid accumulation of very bulky files".
One memo shows FBI interest in the Roswell crashed-UFO incident. The Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office to the FBI Director on March 22, 1950, stated that, "An investigator for the Air Force stated that three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico. They were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only three feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots." Alledgedy, the saucers were found in New Mexico due to the fact that the Government has a very high-powered radar set-up in that area and it is believed the radar interferes with the controlling mechanism of the saucers. No further evaluation was attempted by SA (redacted) concerning the above." Military authorities had issued a press release, which began: ‘The many rumours regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc.’
This is not the first time FBI UFO files have come to light. For example, it was known from FoIA documents that FBI agents were dispatched all across remote rural America investigating mysterious animal mutilations in the late 1970s as the White House panicked. More than 8,000 cattle were victims in the late 1970s. Terrified farmers in New Mexico, Nebraska and Colorado feared extraterrestrials in flying saucers. Internal memos describe animals with taken tongues, lower lips, sex organs, eyes and ears, and often completely drained of blood. One investigator theorised that, “These animals are picked up by aircraft, mutilated elsewhere and returned and dropped from aircraft. ... Identical mutilations have been taking place all over the south west. Whoever is responsible is well organised with boundless technology, financing and secrecy.” In January 1979, US Attorney General Griffin Bell wrote to spooked senator Harrison Schmitt of New Mexico, “The materials sent to me indicate one of the strangest phenomenon in my memory.” From 1976 to 1978 there were numerous mysterious incidents at a ranch in Dulce. Many other FBI documents demonstrate clearly the FBI's interest in UFOs, UFO researchers and alleged UFO contactees.
Official release of government UFO files in bulk onto the internet is not new. There have been international trends to release government UFO archives this way, as was done by the French and the UK governments, a process which expects to bypass the burden of processing Freedom of Information requests and assist UFO researchers. Many thousands of UFO documents have now been released to the public this way, and shows how, despite what the public has been lead to believe, behind the scenes our governments and police forces have been taking a serious interest in UFOs. Former Ministry of Defence UFO expert Nick Pope said, “These documents show how seriously the authorities took the matter and that they were prepared to debate theories about extraterrestrial involvement.”
