Project and UFO Myths and Misconceptions

Copyright (C) 2009, Richard A. Jones.

Myths and misconceptions regarding UFOs will never disappear, especially for those that refuse to examine the facts. The same is true of the PoliceUFO.com project, where even promoters of the UFO phenomenon add to the list of misconceptions, without taking the time examine the facts. Here are a few common project and UFO misconceptions.

PoliceUFO.com was inspired by Gary Heseltine's PRUFOS Project

Not true. PoliceUFO.com was inspired under completely different circumstances to that of Gary Heseline's PRUFOS project. Although the PRUFOS project existed prior to the inception of PoliceUFO.com, the PRUFOS project was discovered only during research for PoliceUFO.com

Richard Jones is a police officer

False. Richard Jones has never been a police officer and this is made clear in various places throughout PoliceUFO.com and in statements made and published by media releases. Richard Jones has always been a civilian and he worked for the police only in an administrative role in a civilian organisation managed by the police under a Crime Prevention initative. Richard worked with the police, but was never officially employed by a police department, nor would he appear on any police payroll.

UFOs are an American phenomenon

Clearly not true. In English speaking countries and for much of the world, the media has merely been dominated by America. The UFO phenomenon is global and timeless, and this website is testament to that fact.

UFOs are secret aircraft such as the Aurora

While the Aurora and other secret aircraft might explain some recent UFO sightings, the UFO phenomenon has been going on for thousands of years and cannot be explained by recent advances in aircraft technology. Secret aircraft are not time machines, and do not match most historical UFO descriptions. Finally, why are people seeing stealth aircraft? That's a contradiction in terms. And if UFOs don't exist, they can't be secret aircraft, because then secret aircraft wouldn't exist, which again is a contradiction. UFOs are not the Aurora. An Aurora is identified, UFOs are not.

UFOs are only reported by whackos, weirdos and the mentally unstable

To the contrary, UFOs reported by whackos, weirdos and the mentally unstable are usually disregarded, and most witnesses do not want public attention. UFO organisations, researchers and investigators generally look for credible witnesses and make efforts to examine witness character. This website is testament to that. The belief that UFOs are only reported by the mentally inept merely discourages credible people from coming forth. Further, UFOs are often reported and correlated by people of various backgrounds from various locations, and often confirmed by electronic equipment such as RADAR, photographs and satellite images. Finally, recent research from Mental Health professionals such as psychiatrists reveals that most mental patients are not interested in discussing UFOs.

God does not approve of UFOs

The bible and much religious material is riddled with tales of UFOs and encounters with superior alien intelligences. The very notion of God, angels, and religious experience cannot be separated from the UFO topic. In fact, modern stories of UFOs and alien contact are perfectly consistent with ancient religious discourse. It is impossible to separate the two topics. Our notion of God, a supernatural intellectually advanced being from the heavens, perfectly fits the definition of an extraterrestrial. If God exists, I'm sure he would appreciate us taking the time to understand him and his creations.

UFOs just don't exist

Every year billions of dollars in defence and space research and development are spent on equipment for detecting and identifying objects that enter our airspace. Technically, all aircraft and atmospheric objects that are yet to be identified are UFOs, which RADAR operators call "Uncorrelated Targets". This does not mean they are alien. UFOs do not necessarily imply alien. UFOs are "Unidentified". Finally, if UFOs don't exist, why are there so many UFO witnesses, researchers, investigators, organisations, sects, cults, religions, books, and websites dedicated to examining UFOs? Because UFOs do exist, and denying their existence doesn't make them go away.

Astronomers don't see UFOs

Yes they do. For centuries astronomers have been observing and studying unknown objects. If they didn't, no progress in astronomy would have been made. Also, some of our most renown astronomers have reported UFOs, and further, many of the most famous astronomers became renown UFO investigators and researchers, such as Dr. J. Allen Hynek, and Jacques Vallee, who also have reported their own sightings of UFOs.

There is no proof of UFOs

Proof is merely what we accept as adequate evidence to support a belief. So there may or may not be proof, depending on your view, but there sure is plenty of evidence. As far as a court of law is concerned, if there are enough witnesses, that itself is accepted as proof. And yet, globally, thousands of highly credible witnesses, such as police officers, report UFOs, but the phenomenon is still disputed. Combined with all the physical evidence such as radiation readings, photographs, RADAR readings, bodily scarring, ground indentations, strange metallic fragments, missing people and animals - Well, how much evidence do YOU need for proof? Finally, if a UFO with alien occupants landed on the Whitehouse lawn, were captured and publicly paraded, proof would still remain illusive, because science has yet to agree on what would constitute proof of UFOs and alien life, and unbelievers would still argue that what is being seen is not a UFO or alien.

If UFOs and aliens existed they would openly show themselves and enter into open dialogue

Really? Is that what we do when we observe another species on earth? When observing an ants nest, do we land on the nest to make ourselves known, find the queen and enter into an open dialogue with the colony? Hardly. What is clear, is that our actions, whatever that may be, in our superior intellect, would be incomprehensible to the ants. We can only expect the same from an advanced intellect from elsewhere interacting with us.

UFOs exist only in Western culture

Untrue. Many UFO researchers are now concentrating on reports and information from indigenous communities from around the world. The UFO phenomenon is all pervasive, existing in every culture and on every continent. Information from indigenous communities provides us with unique insights into the phenomenon. For our interests, the indigenous peoples of Australia provide both interesting parallels and unique views. For example, according to the Warlpiri people in central Australia, near UFO-hotspot Alice Springs, UFOs were usually portrayed as spaceships inhabited by beings in search of water, who were interested in little else. Like the nomadic Warlpiri people, the aliens seek water. Like warnayarra (the rainbow serpent), the aliens can be blamed for the depletion of water and are able to recognise and harm outsiders.
